“Taxpayers have no choice but to entrust the IRS with their most sensitive financial information. Protecting that information is not optional. TIGTA’s latest findings reveal alarming failures to safeguard taxpayer records and hold IRS employees accountable. Taxpayers deserve better than an agency that fails to protect their privacy and police its own ranks. Restoring trust demands stronger safeguards, real consequences for misconduct, and an end to the culture of complacency at the IRS.”

Every year, Americans entrust the IRS and its employees to protect their most sensitive financial information. Yet a new report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) raises serious questions about whether the IRS is truly upholding that responsibility.

Between 2022 and 2025, TIGTA identified 86 instances of suspicious access to confidential tax records belonging to 30 high-profile individuals, including celebrities, government officials, and business leaders. The activity involved 52 IRS employees, exposing serious gaps in the agency's ability to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive taxpayer information.

While TIGTA’s investigation focused on high-profile individuals, the underlying principle remains the same: taxpayer privacy is a fundamental right that the IRS has a responsibility to uphold, yet the agency lacks adequate safeguards to protect it.

The implications extend far beyond celebrities and public officials. If the IRS cannot adequately monitor who accesses the records of prominent individuals, what assurances do everyday taxpayers have that their personal financial information is protected? This latest failure threatens to further erode public confidence in an agency that has already strayed far from its mission of serving taxpayers.

The need for stronger oversight, meaningful accountability, and sufficient safeguards could not be clearer. For an agency that demands strict compliance from taxpayers and aggressively enforces the tax code, the IRS continues to fall short of the standards it expects Americans to meet.

AIA will continue to expose these abuses, demand accountability, and fight to ensure the IRS puts taxpayers and their rights first.
